He is appreciated all over the world for his essays. About the significance of his essays Mathew Arnold, a great critic, is of the view, " As Wordsworth's poetry is, in my judgement, the most important work done in our language during the present century, so are the Emerson's essays, I think, the most important work done in prose" .  His prose style is marked by its aphoristic quality and epigrammatic terseness. The sentences are remarkably impressive, handled with subtleness and have poetic beauty.  Civil Disobedience Summary (In Hindi) Introduction : Henry David Thoreau : हेनरी डेविड थोरो, एक प्रमुख पारलौकिकवादी, एक अमेरिकी विचारक, कवि, दार्शनिक और एक निबंधकार थे। वह गुलामी (slavery) और सामाजिक संस्थानों पर अपने हमलों के लिए सबसे ज्यादा जाने जाते हैं। वह एक अन्य अमेरिकी ट्रान्सेंडेंटलिस्ट राल्फ वाल्डो इमर्सन से काफी प्रभावित थे। इमर्सन के माध्यम से ही वो पारलौकिकता के विचार से परिचित हुए। Thoreau के कार्यों में ट्रान्सेंडैंटलिज़्म केंद्रीय दर्शन है। उन्होंने कई व्याख्यान दिए जिनमेे उन्होंने  लोगों के अधिकारों और उनकी इच्छाओं पर सरकार के अन्यायपूर्ण अतिक्रमण पर हमला किया। थोरो अपने व्याख्यान के लिए सबसे ज्यादा जाने जाते हैं, जिसे बाद में एक निबंध सविनय अवज्ञा के रूप में प्रकाशित किया गया था। उनकी एक अन्य प्रसिद्ध कृति वाल्डेन   नामक पुस्तक है। इमर्सन के अलावा, उन पर  भारतीय दर्शन, पिंडर, अरस्तू, होमर, डार्विन आदि का भी प्रभाव था। थोरो के दर्शन का अमेरिका और विदेश दोनों में बड़े पैमाने पर प्रभाव पड़ा। महात्मा गांधी, लियो टॉल्स्टॉय और मार्टिन लूथर किंग जूनियर उनके सविनय अवज्ञ
